How to combat Decision Paralysis

When we have a lot of emails to deal with, a never-ending list of tasks, and a jam-packed schedule, we might experience decision paralysis. Sometimes, when we're presented with too many options, we might find it hard to make a choice and end up choosing nothing at all. While procrastinating may seem like a good idea for a short time, it can quickly spiral and harm our future work habits.

Let’s look at some ways to combat decision paralysis and help you become more productive at work again:

Prioritise your tasks

Write down every task you need to do and organise them in order of importance and due date. Recognise your work patterns and allocate more demanding tasks to hours where you can focus more. Simple tasks can be done later in the day, making the afternoon slump easier to get through.

Put a time limit on tasks

Instead of trying to work on several projects at the same time, dedicate a block of time to each individual task. This should help you to manage your time more efficiently and improve your focus by concentrating on one thing at a time.

Don’t aim for perfection

Trying to do every task meticulously can put unnecessary pressure on yourself. Overthinking every single detail can delay the start of a task and cause anxiety and uncertainty. Manage your own expectations and do not doubt your own abilities to successfully complete a task. Mistakes are bound to happen, but don’t let that stop you from making progress.

Ask for help and advice

Receiving positive feedback from peers can help with motivation and reassure you that you are on the right track. Alternatively, if you are struggling with the workload, you should approach your manager and ask for help with resolving the situation.
